THE TRANSATLANTIC CONNECTIONS BETWEEN SOUTHAMPTON AND NORTH AMERICA HAVE A LONG HISTORY AND THIS NEW ONE HAS MORE BOUNCE THAN WHATS HER NAME IN THAT TITANIC FILM
For a couple of blokes that met at a Mr. Scruff gig in Southampton in 2006, the Jellybass project could not have been better named. Jellybass are the duo known as Lo & Hz (aka DJ Chix and Joe) who received the ultimate accolade of getting their tracks played by their hero, the big Andy Scruff himself.
And then one of our favourite Canadian rappers, Abdominal (he of Abdombinal Workout) shows an interest in doing a vocal over one of the wobbliest tracks, thats after hes had his toast of course (how Mr. Scruff is that?).
Mr. Scruff has long had links with Do Right in Toronto so it seems even more appropriate that on the b-side theres a very scruffian sounded mixture of Mr. Oizo and big band horn (Vulgar) and a spaced out chill breaks skank called Liquid Metal.
Jellybass style of breaks to dub to Scruff (and now Hip-Hop) is defintely on the leftfield as their odd musical mix fails to fit into any neat genre box; ideal folks for fans of FLY global music to follow then!
Lots of great EPs about at the moment but dont let this one pass you by; also watch out for some dubstep remixes that belong on the Naughty Step and theres a few gigs coming up with the Canadian fat lip in May.
After the local disappointment of the Freerange Festival being cancelled, this is just the right vibe to put a smile on your face.

Jellybass have had a track featured on Israeli label 'Might Fat Records' latest compilation CD. The album is called 'Chasing The Third' and includes the track 'Odd Socks' which is a special reworking of the track 'Socks' which can be found on our first album.
We've just had some dubstep remixes done of four of our more dub influenced tracks. The 'Naughty Step' guys have done a great job and you can hear clips over at their myspace (myspace.com/naughtystepuk).
Sub Skank has been featured in the lounge section of Trackitdown music download service...
"Jellybass strike pure gold with their latest album, a collection of some of the finest breaks, dub and ambient tracks around at the moment. Check out 'Sub Skank' for an idea of what to expect, featuring some superb, heavy beats!"
Its finally here, the album is finally available for public consumption! This has to be among the best music ever featured in the Listening Lounge. Part dub, part breaks, it's set of 11 one-minute clips from LoHz oeuvre that'll have any right minded music lover in spasm.
Leading the way is a huge, heavyweight, warping and wobbling bass that sounds like the name suggests - take a listen to 'Loop Da Loop' or 'Sub Skank' on a big system for the full experience. Each track has a different quirky quality about it - be it rythmic, sonic or melodic - that never resorts to cheese, and it all combines cohesively into a unique, well-defined sound. If there's any justice in the world, this should rise to the top of the pile by virtue alone. someone out there must want to give them a deal
The world of unsigned music can be an extremely boggy affair, scooting around for the odd gem usually results in ending up knee deep in grot. Thats pretty much why I stopped looking and tend to sit back and see what gets thrown my way. The theory here is that 9 times out of 10 people with the confidence to push their stuff are actually sitting on something good. So with that little fanfare over and done with I present to you: Jellybass! The brainchild of the whole affair remains a dark secret and is simply known as LoHz, a rather apt artist name for the onslaught that is this album. 10 tracks of pure low level bliss is whats on offer and each one had its own little theme. Personal favourite Vulgar teases with a live style bassline and swinging brass before descending into a disgustingly groovy electro bassline. Loop Da Loop is also an absolutely massive tune and pretty much sums up the groove and intention of the whole album. A very big dub influence is felt on many tracks and the ease of each groove that drops is made all the better by not having to drop into hi-speed breaks. So Flat Eric struts up to your car and shoots you in the face, GTA style. He nicks your car and goes to pick up Leftfield before going on a complete rampage through DnB, Breaks and Hip-Hop with a fucking huge gun. Luckily LoHz are nearby and waste no time in smashing Eric with a 50 pound lump hammer before feasting on his yellow guts. If you can actually imagine this happening then you probably dont need any help in twisting your mind. For all other people I seriously suggest you get yourselves over to http://www.jellybass.co.uk where you can preview the album and buy it direct." - UDY
"wobble" sends out a sound pulse from its landing position on the newly formed planet just to the left of the Milky Way which scientists are desperately trying to explore. Dubby bass plods and ricocheting drumbeats walk perfectly in line with the shaking bass wave of thick unmachined plastic which has taken control. All of this is pasted over the smooth and rich vocal cut, with a jazzy underlying message. Good stuff.
' Vulgar' is your personal ticket into the most exploded diagram ever, an all day pass into huge fat balancing distortions of liquid metal balanced over a laughing pit of robotic hyenas, whilst ' Loop da loop' is the place your brain goes to when to when you consume one to many bags of marshmallow, and your bloodstream is 97% sugar. Its a thick and rich flyby of your eyeballs in reverb mode.
'Better ask barney lends you the keys to his car, but his car is a VHS player with boiled eggs for wheels...you aint going nowhere pretty quickly. This is the soundtrack to your brain melting whilst you dig through reams and reams of hard yolk.
' Mello Mello' blips and bleeps it along, using a coin for a foot and a photo of the middle of next week as a leg. Gloopy and mellowing along as the bassline forces rigid structures to become thin and porous materials to catch light. Just watch your robotic hips, as they are made of acetate. ' JB5 ' is a beat led attack into enemy territory, which evolves into a funk explosion with small holographic waveforms on the end of every light formed tentacle. Just watch your wallets.
Jellybass - Jellybass isnt the normal type of music I normally listen to, but it did chill my heating valves and rotate my army of photocopiers enough to cause a tiny riot. Its bass rich and packed with dubby wave postures, which are just enough for you all to dissapear into the misty early hours.

This album is one for going out to. You all know what I mean - its Saturday night, youve been drinking various flavoured vodkas and youve got your dancing feet strapped firmly to your body. There's one track which stands out triumphantly, its 'Vulgar'. Im listening to this for the first time and its Tuesday afternoon, around tea time. Kids are walking home from school, settling down to Blue Peter and Ive got this up to ear-bleeding volume. With closed eyes, I'm wishing I was in a kitchen at a house party, dancing on the worktops. The climax in this song transports me to a 30s swing club, filled with ravers. Jellybass will make you move like a human water bed. Theyll make you want to dress up and dance like a fool. It's music for turning up loud and playing to your friends, just to see their faces light up and heads start bobbing when the songs reach their dramatic peaks. This is better than good, this is godlike goodness. Get it, go out and turn to jelly.
